My father was pastor of FBBC for about 6 years from the mid 80's to the early 90's. It is a blessing to see that the church is still there and still reaching the military. The island and church have a special place in my heart. It was a privilege to grow up there and I am thankful that the Lord granted me that blessing.

We were stationed at Lajes Field from '77 to '80 and were members of FBBC when it was located south of Praia off the road toward Port Martins. The building may not be there now. I heard that you are corresponding with Pastor David Martin in Memphis, who was also a member of FBBC at that same time. May I be added to your list of correspondee??? Thanks in advance. Dear Pastor Odom,
I hope you can answer my question about the Charter Church. I was working at the Base School as school librarian, 1973-1975 and attented the Base Chapel. A young service man, Danny Avery was ordained and became the first pastor of the Charter Baptist church and I am a charter member of the Azorean Baptist Cherch. While I was there a Portuguese Speaking missionay came from Brazil as pastor and started mission work on all the islands.
I would like to get intouch with Bro Avery or any one of the Charter members. The State side charter members held a reunion about 12 years ago, I believe, but I was unable to attend. Do you have information on the early church history an address for any members? Thanks for any help.
I lived in Praria while I was working for the Base School, 37 years ago. Since I left there, I served on the mission field in Nairobi, Kenya.
Thanks for any help and I pray God's blessings on your ministry there.
Lois Jones,
Hello, I was just curious to know what became of the church. I was stationed at Lajes from October of 1982 until December of 1983. Pastor Mike Sowa and his wife Rhoda were on the island.
I see from the pictures that much progress has been made. I live in Chicago and am an Associate pastor at Merrill Ave Baptist Church. I got out of the Air Force from Lajes(via McGuire AFB) to attend Bible college in Atlanta. Pastor Sowa wanted me to go to Bob Jones University, his alma mater.
However, I didn't feel the school had much love for people of a darker pigmatation as myself. Pastor Sowa and I would laugh and joke about this all the time. This was 1983 so I'm sure things have progressed. I was there with some good brothers and sisters in Christ (Faith Bible) and I think of them from time to time.
Has Brother Sowa gone to be home with the Lord? I see Eddie Woodfield is still preaching. He was in Italy back in 1982-83.
Anyway, God bless you all as you continue to serve our Lord Jesus Christ.
I used to go to this church when I was a young boy of about ten. I've moved four times or so since I last set foot in the Azores. I live in California right now, miles and miles away. It was a beautiful place from what I remember though and I particularly enjoyed my experiences there with the church.
I'm now a grown man (seems like it) of 19 and I'm pursuing a college degree in Mathematics. From time to time though I look back on my youth and being a part of this church was what made part of my life special and shaped me in ways I'll probably never fully comprehend. I guess when you look through time in your mind you see all of the imagery and events that had an influence on you and when I lived in the Azores, the memory of being at church was the most potent.
I remember the first day I went there. We had family friends (Barman's) that had went there invite me and I even remember my mother trying to straighten me up to look respectable before going to church the morning of my first venture there. It was funny because I remember getting a candy bar for bringing my sister, I think. I think that was the incentive for bringing more people to the church. Eventually my whole family ended up going. It was a good thing, for all of us.
Great is our God and well honor and glory belongs to him and he gave to us wonderful salvation in Christ and evelasting life in health and glean heart passion, thanks and bless and pray, keijo sweden
